     I have been working as a certified Counselor since 2013, specializing in helping people identify and achieve their personal goals by coping with the issues that are causing them distress. I take great pride in the progress and success of my clients, and look forward to helping you!

My approach is Cognitive Behavioral, Mindfulness-based Cognitive, and Solution Focused Brief Therapies. However, the treatment modalities are tailored specifically to you and/or your families therapeutic needs. I will encourage you to examine how your thinking influence the way you feel and behave. In counseling I will also teach you breathing and visualization techniques to help you put your mind and soul in a calmer state when faced with challenges. I will guide you on your journey of self discovery and help you locate the root /original cause of the issue so that you can move toward a place of healing.

Depression

     Sadness is a very common emotion and something we all experience. These feelings are normal, especially when dealing with difficult times in life and they will typically pass with little time, however if you find yourself struggling for more than 6 months; it is time to reach out to a professional.

     When a person has depression, it affects their daily life.  There are many different types of depression including major depressive disorder, melancholia, antenatal or perinatal depression, dysthymia and seasonal affective disorder (SAD), to name a few. Depression is a sad but real illness and is by no means a sign of one's character.  Many people need help to move past their low feelings and to a more fulfilling life.  We will explore what the cause of the symptoms may be and learn technique to move forward to a "happier place".

Self-esteem

     Many people suffer from low self-esteem because of negative self-talk. People with low self-esteem regard themselves critically and may feel a perpetual sense of failure or lack of accomplishment. Feelings of low self-esteem are perpetuated by constantly comparing themselves to others.  These negative messages are rarely true, but the thought patterns may be so ingrained in a person’s behavior that he or she does not recognize the frequency with which they occur.

     Self-esteem is learned in childhood, and certain experiences may interfere with its development, such as being subject to criticism or abuse from caretakers and others; missing out on experiences that would foster a sense of confidence and purpose; receiving little or no positive reinforcement for accomplishments. 

     In adulthood, even a well-developed self-esteem can be challenged by sudden life changes or perceived failures.  Therapy can help put such events in perspective and enhance strengths to increase resilience.  We will address issues like low self-esteem and help you gain a stronger sense of self, become more assertive, confident, and self-aware so you will learn to treat yourself with the same kindness and encouragement you would offer others.

Anxiety/Stress

     Feeling anxious is a normal reaction to stress, and everyone feels stressed and anxious at times.  Stress/anxiety can even be positive — when it helps motivate you to address a tense situation at work, study harder for an exam, prepare for a new situation, or stay focused on an important task. In general, they can help you cope and doesn’t last long. But when stress leads to extreme anxiety and becomes excessive, is not appropriate for the situation, or lasts a long time, it can get in the way of your everyday activities and may interfere with how you get along with others.

     Severe anxiety can appear following a trauma or a life-threatening experience; for others, stressful life events can cause unmanageable levels of anxiety.  There are a number of effective treatments for anxiety that can help you cope with these symptoms and greatly improve your quality of life. Counseling can help you learn new ways of thinking, practice positive behaviors, and take active steps to move beyond your symptoms.

Eating Disorders

     Eating disorders are very serious and complex psychological diseases that cause social, emotional and physical harm when left untreated. It’s important that that if you’re are suffering from an eating disorder that you reach out to a professional for help in order to avoid severe health complications later on. Fortunately, all eating disorders are very treatable and help is available for effective recovery from anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorders, and eating disorders not otherwise specified (EDNOS). Seeking professional treatment for eating disorders can be scary, but it is the most powerful way to achieve real, long-term recovery. It will be the most rewarding and life-changing journey of your life.
